There is No Hurry to Lose Weight

Do you feel like your weight is not coming off fast enough?

For many of my weight loss clients, they feel frustrated that they have not reached their goal weight more quickly.

They stand on the scale each morning, and they choose to make the number on the scale mean weight loss is not progressing rapidly enough.

When we are in a rush to reach our goal weight, or any goal for that matter, it is because we believe life will be better once we achieve the result.

Countless women have told me how happy and confident they will be when the scale reads X amount of pounds.

My questions for these clients are:

·         What will you make it mean about yourself if you accomplish it?

·         Could that be true of you now just as things are right this moment?

Whenever we are in a rush to get anywhere it is because we believe that the destination is superior or more desirable than where we are right now.

This is always a lie.

The human experience is a balance of positive and negative emotion.

Life is made up of a contrast of emotions, and this is a good thing.

No one can be happy 100% of the time because there is no happy without sad.

If we are happy all of the time, we wouldn’t even know it because there’s no sad—there’s no balance.

Many of my clients believe if they lose X amount of pounds, everything will be better once they achieve it.

There’s also a lot of nostalgia about the past, and many women believe if they weighed what they did when they were in high school, or in their 20’s, life would be amazing.

They will feel confident and happy.

Their smaller body will cause them to no longer feel self-conscious, and they will no longer worry about what others think about them.

They believe achieving their goal weight will cause them to no longer hate themselves because they have a perfect body.

Once they achieve their goal weight, however, they note some things are better, but other things are worse.

They note they now have loose, excess skin.

They are upset because they look older.

Or they’re sad because their hair isn’t as thick as it was.

The balance always exists.

The truth is, there will always be another “there” in contrast to your “here.”

There is no “arrival.”

As you break through one barrier, you will be met with another.

This is because we are human with a human brain that interprets things in a way that has us feeling negative emotion.

This is the beauty of life—imagine how boring it would be to get to the destination with nowhere else to go.

Growth is essential to the human spirit.

You cannot experience full satisfaction without it.

Staying present and focused is key.

For many clients, they could be thinking that weight loss IS working.

Often, being in a hurry also is an indication that clients are believing weight loss is not working.

My client, Janet, shared with me that she had lost 10 lbs. since she began her diet 3 weeks prior.

She had not lost weight over the last 4 days, however, so she was in a hurry to create a new food plan in hopes to see weight loss once again.

I shared with her that it was totally available to her to believe that her current weight loss plan WAS working.

Her only problem was what she was making it mean that she had not lost weight in the last 4 days.

She was missing an opportunity to celebrate her success, and instead was focusing on wanting to speed up her weight loss that she was already experiencing.

I want to offer considering where you are right now could be the best place to create your weight loss goal.

You didn’t “have to” lose weight in the first place, and you don’t “have to” lose more unless you want to.

We set goals for ourselves, and not to use them against ourselves.

What if you believed there was no rush to lose weight?

Would you be doing things differently?
